Jamie Carragher insists David Moyes’ West Ham exit is a ‘GREAT decision’ for all

Jamie Carragher has insisted David Moyes’ departure from West Ham is a ‘great decision’ for all parties involved.

The Hammers have announced Moyes will leave his role as manager by ‘mutual consent’ when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The Scotsman will be replaced by Julen Lopetegui, who has now agreed to takeover at the east London side ahead of the 2024/25 season.

And Jamie Carragher says the decision suits everyone as he heaped praise on Moyes successful spell at West Ham.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football programme, the former Liverpool defender said: ‘I think it’s a great decision all round for everybody.

‘I think what it does now is it give the West Ham fans the chance in the next home game to really send him off with a salute that he thoroughly deserves.

‘You goot to go back to 1980 under John Lyall when they won the FA Cup he was also the manager that got them to third in 1986.  You think about how long ago that is, he’s (Moyes) being West Ham’s best manager.

‘To win a European trophy i think is pretty special and he deserved that for his managerial career not just what he done at West Ham. He’s been a top Prmeir League manager.

Carragher also believes Moyes will soon return to the Premier league due to his vast experience in the top flight .

He added: ‘I think he will be back in the Premier League soon enough, soon enough next season or the year after because he know how to basically navigate a Premier League season.

‘I think it’s right all round. I can under some of the frustration with the style of football i get that. But result wise he’s done a brilliant job for West Ham.’

In confirming his exit, Moyes said: ‘I have enjoyed four and a half brilliant years at West Ham, and the club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019.

‘When I joined West Ham for a second time, the club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe.

‘After leading the club to safety, we guided the team to finishes of sixth and seventh in the Premier League, and I was delighted when we won the Europa Conference League title last June – the club’s first major trophy in 43 years.

‘I would like to thank all the players for their support, and all the success they have achieved, over the last four and a half years.

‘I have really enjoyed working with everyone at West Ham, and I would like to thank the Board for giving me the opportunity to manage this great club.

‘I wish my eventual successor, the directors, the players, the staff, the fans, and everybody at West Ham, all the very best for the future.’

It is believed Lopetegui is likely to assume the position of head coach not manager. Moyes is currently manager.

Talks between Lopetegui and the Hammers accelerated towards the end of last week, the Spaniard racing ahead of Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim in the race for the London Stadium job.

Amorim revealed over the weekend that he has now decided to stay at Sporting, but regardless of the Portuguese’s choice to stay in Lisbon it is understood Lopetegui was alway the front-runner for the job.
