Thomas Tuchel insists he has no regrets as decision to take off Harry Kane slammed

Thomas Tuchel maintains he has no regrets about bringing Harry Kane off during Bayern Munich’s late Champions League exit to Real Madrid.

The Germans were poised to go through until the 89th minute when Joselu scored the first of his two quickfire strikes in the Spanish capital, which turned the tie on his head. Following Alphonso Davies’ opening goal Tuchel proceeded to take off a host of his attacking stars.

Leroy Sane, Jamal Musiala and Kane were all hauled off in the final stages. It meant, when Bayern went searching for an equaliser, they had many of their main attacking weapons sat on the bench. Ultimately they couldn’t score the goal that would’ve forced extra-time.

Kane, in his debut season with the Bavarians, has scored 44 times, breaking numerous records en route. He couldn’t influence matters in the final moments but Tuchel has no regrets over his tactical decisions.

He told TNT Sports: “It hurts. It’ll take a while to recover, but on the one hand it’s a loss where we left it all out on the pitch. Of course, it’s tough to accept. It’s part of reality. No regrets. But on the other, there were too many injuries, a few too many substitutions, too many cramps.

“We started with a front four and by the end they were all off the pitch. And then Manu, who had been exceptional in saving us all night, made a mistake he wouldn’t make in another 100 years.”

Tuchel is expected to leave the Allianz Arena in the summer and will do so off the back of a rare trophyless season for the Munich outfit. The German though was left fuming when a late goal was ruled out as the linesman produced an early offside flag, with replays suggesting the Bayern players may have been onside.

The ex-Chelsea boss said: “We scored one, and it’s a disastrous decision from the linesman and referee. It feels almost like a betrayal in the end because of that decision. The linesman said sorry – that does not help. To raise the flag in a decision like this, in a close decision in the last minute.

“And the referee as well, the referee does not have to whistle. He sees that we win the second ball. To whistle, it’s a very, very bad decision and it’s against the rules. It’s a bad decision from both of them, it’s a disaster. Tough to swallow.”
