Barcelona announce new contract for 17-year-old breakout star

Barcelona have announced a new contract for 17-year-old central defender Pau Cubarsi, extending his current deal from 2026 to 2027.

The teenage sensation has impressed Barcelona fans since making his debut in January, and in just 20 appearances, convinced the club that he is worth a new contract. More significantly than the extra year that he has signed for is the rise in his release clause: it will increase from €10m to €500m, scaring of potential suitors.

Cubarsi is expected to sign another extension when he turns 18, with the maximum duration that an under-18 can sign being three years. That fresh extension is expected after his birthday in January and will tie him to the club until either 2029 or 2030.

One of the few ‘untouchables’ in the Barcelona squad this summer, Cubarsi along with Gavi and Lamine Yamal are believed to be the spine that the Catalan side want to build around in the coming years.
