Mikel Arteta urges Arsenal to create ‘a new history’ against Bayern Munich

Mikel Arteta has urged his Arsenal team to create ‘a new history’ against Bayern Munich in Tuesday night’s Champions League quarter-final first leg after a series of heartbreaks at the hands of their German rivals.

The Gunners have been pummelled 5-1 in each of their last three fixtures against Bayern, most recently in 2017, but find themselves in the quarter-finals of Europe’s top competition for the first time in 14 years.

Yet Arteta believes this is a new era for Arsenal as he plots to take down the six-time European champions. He said: ‘Bayern have the experience and that is in their history.

‘We are now creating a new history and that is why those moments we had in the group stages — and what we did with Porto — are really important. It generated belief and a sense of positivity that when the moment comes, we can overcome it.

‘You are going to need magic moments. You have to make it happen, otherwise it’s not going to come.’
